Hospital Birth is Not Natural

I recently had this thought dawn on me when I was reflecting on birth. "Going to a hospital for a 'natural' birth is like going to McDonald's for a 'healthy' burger."

What do I mean by that? That there is nothing natural about a hospital birth. It is NOT natural for women to birth in a controlled setting like a hospital; filled with hyper-sanitization, sick people, doctors that don't trust in the wisdom of the women's body to birth, and a general energy of fear.

The word 'natural' has lost all its meaning over the last decade, because its overused and often subjective in nature. Because what does natural actually mean? Everyone has their own meaning and perspective of natural. It's used as a buzzword for marketing strategies to sell products, is a blanket term over certain styles of 'natural' food stores, yet a lot of foods in those stores aren't even that healthy, just 'healthier' in comparison to the junk sold in regular grocery stores.

But again, what is the meaning of natural? By definition, natural means coming from nature, not made by or of people. So for me, when it comes to birth, natural means not having any interference or interventions by a medical provider, not having any type of synthetic medicine put into the body, and being instinctually primal in our freedom of movement and trusting in the body to birth as it feels right. Any disturbance from an external factor that affects this primal nature, is a distraction and blockage from a truly natural birth. That is why NO hospital birth is truly natural.

Is that a negative criticism of any hospital birth? Absolutely not. It's simply a clarification of definition. You see, humans are quick to feel offended when something they did is seemingly judged by anyone else. But defining right and wrong, and clearly stating what something is, holds zero criticism, so your emotional reaction is a defensiveness. Even if I WERE to state that I don't think birth belongs in the hospital, that we all should be birthing at home and liberate ourselves from the medicalized obstetrics system, that is MY truth. And you can choose to reflect on my statement and inquire more discussion with me, or dismiss it as it doesn't resonate with YOUR truth. And that is fine. There is no reason to feel any offense to someones statement.

Now that we got past that part, let's discuss further why hospital birth isn't natural. The first reason is that from the very first prenatal appointment, you are handing over control of your birth to your doctor. As much as your provider will promise you that they will honor your desires, your birth plan, and have a doula present, there is absolutely no guarantee because doctors in a hospital setting are trained in an emergency and fear based mindset. They are, most of the time, in a hero role when they work. And you are just a victim of your birth, not in control of it. That is what you get in a hospital.

The only way to liberate yourself from the confines of industrialized obstetrics, is by stepping OUT of that environment. By reflecting in yourself and your fears, and considering what makes you FEEL that you NEED a hospital. Your thoughts create your reality, and your pregnancy and birth will be a direct reflection of how you think and perceive of birth. These perceptions are not even created from our own conscious thought, but from conditioned programming of society, past traumas, and generational cycles of oppressed womanhood.

How do we do that? That is where I come in. As a wild birth guide, I am committed to support women as they follow their instincts. We have a strong intuitive wisdom, and it gets suppressed by external conditioning and outside influences that have made us second guess that wisdom. As the feminine awakening is upon us, we are taking this power back, and releasing the oppressive energies of society. Now is our time to take back our birthright as women; to be the creators of the next generation of society, and do so in our divine power. Birth is women's wisdom.
